He was commissioned as Major of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry on October 2, 1862, but held that duty for only a month before he was transferred to the 3nd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. His time with the new regiment was again relatively brief, for in March 1862 he was given the task of recruiting another regiment that would become the 4th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry.
